FRANZISKANER

FRANCISCAN

WIKIPEDIA

The Franziskaner is a brand of Weizenbier or Weissbier brewed in Munich by the brewery Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu.

The brewery, documented as early as 13631, is one of the oldest in Munich. Its name comes from the fact that it was then located near a Franciscan convent2. It was purchased in 1863 by Josef Sedlmayr, brother of the illustrious master brewer of Spaten, Gabriel Sedlmayr. In 1922, the two breweries merged, forming a joint-stock company.

The first Weizenbier from the brewery was launched in 1964 under the name Spaten Champagner Weissbier; it was renamed Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier in 19742.
