Mort subite is a Belgian beer belgian of spontaneous fermentation of the lambic type, created by Théophile Vossen in Brussels, and currently produced by the Mort Subite brewery formerly known as De Keersmaeker brewery located in Kobbeghem (municipality of Asse) in the Pajottenland3.

À la Mort Subite is the name of the café where the beer was originally brewed.

Beers

From mixtures of different lambics of different ages different types of beers are made, all with a maximum alcohol volume of 5.5%. Today, six varieties are produced:

  • Sudden Death Original Gueuze, matured in oak barrels and refermented in the bottle, with a copper color and a sweet, sour and tangy taste;
  • Sudden Death Original Kriek, lambic in which cherries have been macerated, matured in oak barrels, with a red color;
  • Mort subite Natural Oude Gueuze, a balanced blend of an old (minimum 3 years) and a young lambic matured in oak barrels, sold in 37.5 cl bottles;
  • Sudden Death Xtreme Kriek, with a very fruity cherry taste, measuring 4.3% vol. of alcohol;
  • Sudden Death Xtreme Raspberry, with a very fruity raspberry taste, containing 4.3% vol. of alcohol;
  • Sudden Death Witte Lambic, a blend of young lambic and fruit-flavored white beer, 5.5% vol. of alcohol.

Currently, Mort Subite Pêche and Faro are only produced on a small scale to be available in certain cafés like the café À la Mort Subite4. Mort Subite Manzana and Cassis are no longer produced.

The brewery is a member of the High Council for Craft Lambics (HORAL).
